for Invasive Aquatic Plants
Curly-leaf
pondweed is a highly competitive plant, capable of rapid growth
and spread. Infestations may displace native species, reduce
biodiversity, impede recreational activities, and reduce
property values. As the dense mats of vegetation decay,
available oxygen in the water may be depleted. The resulting
anoxic (low oxygen) conditions may lead to fish kills and harm
other aquatic organisms. Nutrients released from the decaying
plant matter may also contribute to cultural eutrophication and
algae blooms.
University of

Threats to Native Habitats
Eurasian milfoil is a highly aggressive aquatic
plant that can form dense mats which congest waterways and crowd
out native aquatic plants. Thick growth can impair recreational
uses of waterways including boating, swimming, and fishing.
Dense growth of Eurasian milfoil can alter and degrade the
habitat of native fish and other wildlife. The visual impact of
the flat, yellow-green of matted vegetation on milfoil-dominated
lakes often creates the perception that the lake is “infested”
or “dead.” Cycling of nutrients from sediments to the water
column by Eurasian milfoil may lead to deteriorating water
quality and algal blooms on infested lakes.

GLA
board approved to apply to the DNR for Curly Leaf Pondweed
treatment permit again this year.We saw great benefit in the treatment last year and so we
decided to apply for a greater acreage in 2008.All this said, the chemical cost will be substantial
(if approved by DNR), so our funds will dissipate quickly. Please don’t look at the balance of 2007 and imply that
GLA is OK financially.As
you can see below, 2007 was a deficit year
and we are anticipating 2008 to break even. 2007 Income/Expense
Statement is listed below.
The
month of April is the time to become a new member of the Green
Lake Association.We
would also encourage all of our existing members to renew their
current memberships.Please
fill out the form in the GLA newsletter and send it in with the
annual membership fee.You
can also go to the association’s website www.greenlakechisago.org
to print a copy of the renewal form.
We
are always looking for new faces and fresh ideas. Currently we
are in need of board and committee members. We would especially like to fill the vacancy for our Fund
Raising Committee
Chairperson.Committee members are needed for fund raising,
membership, and lake treatments.PLEASE consider volunteering.Feel free to contact any board member if you would like
to become more involved with the GLA.Their phone numbers are listed in the newsletter and on
our website.
We
prefer new and renewed memberships during our membership drive
in April for record keeping purposes. However we are happy to accept them at any time during
the year.

President’s

2008
has arrived and though winter still has its grip on us the
anticipation of warm weather and summer activities will get us
through. It won’t be long before the ice is out and the boats
will be back on the water. With the return of summer and all it’s
enjoyment comes another season of treating exotic weeds in Green
Lake. We all wish this problem would just go away but the hard
fact is that there is no permanent cure at this time. The only
way to maintain the water quality and safe passage is annual
treatments to keep the weeds at bay. The Green Lake Association
treats Eurasian Milfoil and Curly Pond Leaf. Both are invasive
weeds that threaten our lake in many ways. The following
articles are just two of many documenting the harmful nature of
these exotic weeds. I look forward to another successful
treatment season and ask for your support. No other entity is in
line to be stewards of our lake. The GLA is an asset that should
not be taken lightly. Support your association via volunteerism
or monetarily. Have a safe and enjoyable summer.

Days
'till open water:
Spring is
almost here...really!
02/08/08
The countdown begins. According to the
ice-out averages compiled by Rick Ekstrand, Big and Little Green Lake open up
about April 9. These dates and averages can be found by clicking on the Ice
On & Off Dates in the column over to the left. We will keep the
countdown going until that date since we are all anxiously waiting to get our
boats and docks back in the water. We'll see you out there!
02/09/08
Today
Windy. Mostly cloudy. A chance of snow in the morning... then a slight
chance of snow in the afternoon. Areas of blowing and drifting snow
through the day. Highs around 20. Temperatures falling into the single
digits in the afternoon. Southwest winds 10 mph increasing to northwest
25 to 30 mph with gusts to around 45 mph in the afternoon. Chance of
snow 50 percent. Lowest wind chill readings 16 below to 26 below zero in
the afternoon.
With
this forecast, you can but wonder if spring will ever get here...but today, we
are only about 60 days from saying bye-bye to the ice...
02/10/08
It's
pretty cold today, especially with the wind, but it has been worse. According to
the National Weather Service, the lowest temperature ever recorded in the Twin
Cities was -34 degrees set on January 22, 1936 and on January 19, 1970. If it
makes anyone feel any better, the record high was 108 degrees on July 14, 1936.
Happy
WHITE valentine's day. Lot's of snow to shovel,
but no matter-it will all be gone soon!
02/22/08
We
are finally coming out of our cold snap. Hopefully this is the last one. The
average temperature for the end of February is about 33 degrees, and by the time
we get to the end of March, it is 49 degrees. These stats can be found at http://www.crh.noaa.gov/mpx/Climate/MSPNormals.php.
02/26/08
After
an absolutely gorgeous weekend, and a little bit less snow, the meteorologists
are telling us that by this coming Sunday we may get up to 40 degrees! Soon we
will be looking at gray ice...
03/04/08
Where's
the global warming?
03/14/08
With
the last few days near 50, it is apparent spring is almost here! As the melting
snow ponds on the lake, dreams of boating, fishing and swimming in the warm
summer air are upon us!
03/26/08
One
year ago today it was 81 degrees...funny how nobody remembers
that one!
03/30/08
Despite
the heavy snow that may fall tomorrow, the following weather
lore was found today that will help get us through the next
couple of days...
From
Channel 5 News today:"Go back to April 1 &
2, 2002. Heavy snow fell on the Twin Cities area producing
4.6 inches on the 1st and 3 inches on the 2nd. Then 13
days later, the Twin Cities reached a record high of 90 degrees.
It can change quickly." -Meteorologist Rob Koch
04/06/08
Now
that we are finally getting to near 60 degrees, the ice is
beginning to melt around the edges, and some of the small ponds
just south of Green Lake in Scandia are open. It may not be in 3
days due to our cooler winter, but it won't be long!
04/07/08
We'll
have to adjust our timing just a bit do to a colder than normal spring. Even
though it doesn't look like we'll hit our April 9 average, it's almost a
sure bet we'll have our docks in in a little more than two weeks. The latest
recorded ice-out we have on our records is April 24, 1996. It won't be long!
04/09/08
This
isn't funny anymore. Another snowstorm on the way is going to lengthen our
perpetual winter even longer. But, fingers crossed, it may reach 70 by next
week sometime. Stay tuned...
04/15/08
Now
this is more like it! 66 degrees today, and the ice is going fast. I have to
believe that by this weekend, we will be pushing in our docks for the
season.
04/22/08
We
made it! Little Green Lake opened up yesterday, and Big Green lost the rest
of her ice today. Nobody's wasting any time-docks and boats are already in
the water. Should we have a countdown until ice-on starting at 219 days? We
don't think so! Have a fun and safe boating season!
